The Story of a Grim Homecoming
Homecoming's story follows the nightmare turned real life of Alex Shepherd, a war veteran returning to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his kid brother, Josh. From Shepherd's Glen to the foggy streets of dreaded Silent Hill, Alex must face the darkest of horrors in order to find his brother. Struggling with his own grip on reality, it's here that Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother's disappearance, and confront the evil that takes hold of his own flesh and blood in the process.

Improved Gameplay
Firmly steeped in the Survival-Horror genre its series has been pivotal in establishing, action in Homecoming remains based on exploration of the terrors residing in the communities surrounding Toluca lake and puzzle-solving skill as a means of surviving them. But to its credit game developer Double Helix refuses to rest on past laurels, choosing instead to include new more accessible gameplay in the hopes of gaining a new audience for Homecoming. Examples of this gameplay include:

Next-Gen Visual and Spatial Features - Every sequel seeks reinvent the namesake game in their series. Homecoming does this in three ways, by adding the ability to toggle between a traditional third-person view and an action-oriented first-person view; by adding fully 3-D physics to the game, creating a realistic range of motion for any and all objects impacted by the player; and by adding transitions or "Hell States" that alter the game's physical landscape at points in the game both in real-time and via cinematics. All three actively change the way players see themselves and in the process create a whole new game experience.

An Enhanced Combat System - Adding to the standard knives, axes, pipes and other melee weapons that made up the arsenal of previous Silent Hill games, Homecoming adds a wide variety of guns and explosives. Fitting with the military back-story of protagonist Alex Shephard, these weapons can be wielded in attacks weighted as weak or strong and can be strung together in combos to stun or incapacitate opponents, who can then be taken out with powerful finishing moves. With practice players can even perform evasive ducks and rolls and follow these up with counterattacks. But remember that enemy AI has also been significantly improved to compensate for your higher degree of combat prowess, and that it's not uncommon to battle multiple monsters simultaneously.

Key Features:

  • Enter the next chapter of Silent Hill as you delve deeper in the tormented history of the town and learn of the evil that surrounds Toluca Lake.
  • Silent Hill: Homecoming is the 1st Silent Hill game designed for Xbox 360.
  • From the murky fog to the ominous shadows, all-new next-gen graphics bring Silent Hill to life like never before.
  • Survive the denizens of Silent Hill with an all-new enhanced combat system that gives you a wide array of attacks and counters.
  • Solve the treacherous and deadly puzzles of Silent Hill to discover its darkest secrets.
  • Silent Hill: Homecoming will feature an all-new soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Akira Yamaoka.
Exceptional Replay Value
Although Alex Shepherd is the only playable character in Silent Hill: Homecoming there are many other important characters--some returning from earlier games in the series--that can have a dramatic impact on the game. When interacting with these, players are given a choice in how to proceed via dialog trees. Will you take the short route letting only the search for your brother guide you or will you explore the nooks and crannies that make up the mystery of Silent Hill hidden in the small talk you share with non-playable characters? The choice is yours, with different paths providing for possible alternate endings each time you delve into the game.

A Frighteningly Masterful Soundtrack
All games in the Survival-Horror genre seek to create tension and unease through sound and Homecoming does this masterfully through the compositions and sound engineering of Akira Yamaoka. Having scored the music and effects for dozens of video game titles, including all of the previous games in the Silent Hill series, Yamaoka is considered a master at using sound to illicit a response.

5 out of 5 stars Superb   January 6, 2009
Silent Hill has always been a great game. You should buy the very 1st game to understand the story. Music are greatr and things that jumped out at you ....can scare you if you're not expected. I watched my husband play the game, and it makes me feel like I'm watching a movie. Great.

Absolutely brilliant on multiple levels of artistic excellence! A wonderful and compelling addition to an already radiant series.

My highest recommendation goes to Silent Hill 5!

2 out of 5 stars A painful reunion   December 14, 2008
I've been a fan of this series from the beginning. The complex stories, rich symbolism, and horrific atmosphere have always been more than enough to make up for the shortcomings of the camera and the controls. Sadly, this will likely be my final trip to the little town of Silent Hill.

Double Helix has done a fine job of correcting nearly every annoyance from the previous incarnations. Unfortunately, they introduced so many new irritations the final result is actually a step backwards.

The new combat system allows the player much greater control. Aiming is done via an over-the-shoulder view that allows for precision aiming, and a good view of the monsters ahead. Melee weapons can now string together attacks to form combos, and a new dodge mechanic allows for avoiding damage altogether. Dodging rarely works as intended, though, and is virtually useless when fighting more than one enemy (which you will have to do, a lot). Worse, enemy attacks can now knock you down, after which enemies are able to pummel you senseless as you struggle to rise to your feet.

Attempting to pull up a menu to switch weapons, or restore health, is wonky even at the best of times. The menus will occasionally pop up, only to disappear instantly sometimes performing a command, sometimes not. It's annoying during normal play, but potentially fatal during combat. At best this results not getting what you need, at worst, you end up with the wrong weapon and offer the enemy a few free hits.

The camera is now a free floating affair controlled by the player. Unfortunately, the system cannot be inverted. If, like me, you grew up in an era where the only thing close to a first person perspective game was a flight simulator, you will have a difficult time controlling the camera. Especially when things get tense, and reflex takes over, you'll end up looking at the floor or the ceiling rather than your enemy.

The story is engaging, and the voice actors do a decent job of bringing it to life. Don't expect to have to think very hard though. Unlike previous Silent Hill protagonists, Alex's story was clearly written for a wider audience. Gone are the deep wells of symbolism, and the need to analyze everything from the buildings to the monsters. In this game, the monsters serve less as symbols of the character's psychosis, and more as weirdness for weirdness' sake.

Finaly, the difficulty has been ratcheted up significantly. If you're like me, and you play a game more to see the sights than to test your twitch reflexes, you are in for a rough ride. Ammunition and health resources are scarce, meaning you'll need to conserve. Melee combat is difficult, and you will take a lot of damage. Unlike previous games in the series, running isn't as much of an option. Many enemies can keep up with you, and will reward you with damage as a running away present.

The trademark Silent Hill experiences are left intact; disturbing monsters, horrific atmosphere, and a grim sense of foreboding. It seems, however, the developers didn't understand the purpose or meaning of them. In the end, it's as if they made a list of what a "Silent Hill Game" should be, not as fans of the series, but as executives looking to cash in. They then proceeded to go down the list making sure each box was checked.

The final result is a game that misses the mark by a wide margin. Many of the best attributes of Silent Hill have been removed or watered down. The wonky controls and fixed camera were replaced with new ones that lack polish. In the final tally, I find the game frustrating, simplistic, and lacking in the little touches that could have made it the best Silent Hill in years. If this is the direction the town of Silent Hil is heading, I expect this to be my final visit there.

Keep in mind I have not yet finished this, or even played a Silent Hill game before. This game is amazing, It's not as good as Dead Space, but in my opinion it's very close. I'm glad I bought this today instead of Prince of Persia, M rated games are always better.

I am a die hard fan of the silent hill series, i wish they wld come out with the first one again with better graphics, it was such an amazing game. the thing about homecoming is the plot is too straight forward, not the typical silent hill way. and why the hell does the game feel a little like Eli Roths HOSTEL and other movies like SAW. too much of an influence there, stick with the jacobs latter guys. next the combat was a clever addition to the game but it was very frustrating at first, needs to be tweaked for silent hill 6. the graphics were very well done, the fog was good as ever, next they shld re-visit the school from the original silent hill, that was one of my fav. locations and the ghost children were creepy as hell. and it was nice to see pyramid head but it was a shame that he was only a guest appearance, why not fight him or have some more interaction with him, over all for a western company to make the game it was like seeing a B rated horror movie had its moments but in the end keeps you waiting to the next great thing comes, that being Dead Space.
